The recorder is an instrument that goes back as far as the early 10th century. As the voices in the chorus are high to low, so are the voices of the recorder. The recorder we are playing in class is the SOPRANO recorder. Another name for it is the DESCANT recorder, because it usually plays the melody of a song. 
The entire family of recorders from highest to lowest pitch are:

Sopranino
Soprano
Alto
Tenor
Greatbass
Contrabass
Subcontrabass
