WURLITZER Click on images to enlarge Ben Meissner's idea in 1932 to amplify an acoustic piano lead to the creation of several early versions of the Wurlitzer electric piano. Eventually by the early 1950's, the first pianos began to surface. They became increasingly popular with rock bands since 1959 through the 1970's. A competitor to the Rhodes Piano, the Wurlitzer electric piano was much lighter, and had less moving parts making it easier to transport and more reliable. It's growling rough sound made it a natural fit with the guitar bands of the time. My Wurlitzer 200 is identical to the popular 200A model, with the addition of an internal amplifier and speakers in it's cabinet. It was originally designed for piano labs in schools. |
